Pit Stop: Girona

Nikki Le Brocq spent an enviable summer falling in love with Girona’s cafe and cycling culture. Here are her recommendations for must-visits in this hot new cycling mecca...

Get your fix...

Carrer de la Llebre, 3, 17004 Girona

Run by pro cyclist Christian and his lovely wife Amber, La Fabrica is THE place to go for spotting Girona’s resident pro cyclists and enjoying exceptional coffee, breakfast and lunch! If you need your fix either pre ride or as a pick me up when you roll back into Girona old town, La Fabrica is the hands-down winner, with their espressos built on a whopping 17g of finely ground coffee that’s extracted over 28-30 seconds to deliver 34g of liquid espresso. Bam!

Different Gear…

12-18 June 2017, Girona

Unlike the usual one or two day European cycling sportives, Girona hosts a week-long cycling extravaganza! There are three events as part of the festival, one of which is a twilight crit hosted within the magical medieval town walls that includes timed sections on uphill cobbles (think Flanders but in lovely balmy temperatures). There’s a hill-climb time trial up to one of my favourite spots: Els Angels monastery. And a 125km Grand Fondo where you can take in some of Girona’s most beautiful scenery while riding on near perfect tarmac. Divine!

London based women’s cycling brand Queen of the Mountains has an event planned for this Festival. Check out their Facebook page for further details.

GI-524, 17820 Banyoles

At some point while in Girona you’ll want to explore Banyoles and the almighty Rocacorba – a 13.8km climb with an average gradient of 6.5% that’s become legendary since it was resurfaced in 2006. After such a feat you’ll want to rehydrate by the idyllic lake in Banyoles. There are many café’s and bars to choose from, but I recommend relaxing on the veranda at Aquarium Café …

c. Mercaders 3, Girona, 17004

The food in OCCI is simply superb, making it perfect for treating yourself after a good calorie-burning ride. The décor is super stylish, the service is friendly and relaxed and it’s slap-bang in the middle of the old town.  Hard to fault in any way.

Get it fixed…

Carrer Mercaders, 14, 17004 Girona,

Run by husband and wife team Dave and Saskia, who are both amazing cyclists, the guys at Bike Breaks fixed my bike and had me back on the road in a jiffy! I’d definitely recommend.
